Enhancing VHS with AI: software at home or a lab?
There are two routes. You can do it yourself with AI video enhancement software or an upscaling website, if you have a powerful computer, time and a good transfer to start from. Or you can hand it to a lab, which takes care of everything for a fixed price. At Videoconversion, enhancement costs +€9.90 per tape when we digitise it, or from €19.90 for the first hour if your video is already digitised, and before you pay we send you a free 30-second sample of your own video.
1. Two ways to enhance a VHS tape with AI
Artificial intelligence can make a VHS, Video8, Hi8 or MiniDV video look much better on a modern TV or phone: less noise, more sharpness, no interlacing "comb" lines and Full HD. There are two ways to get there:
- •Do it yourself: with AI video enhancement software installed on your computer, or by uploading the video to a website that processes it for you.
- •Use a lab: you hand over the tape or the file and get back the enhanced, checked video for a fixed price.
Neither is best for everyone. It depends on how many videos you have, your equipment and how much time you want to spend.
2. Doing it yourself: what you need
- •A good transfer to start from: AI improves what is in the file. If the tape was captured with a cheap capture device, with the wrong aspect ratio or heavily compressed, the result will be poor.
- •A powerful computer: AI enhancement software runs on the graphics card. On an ordinary laptop, one hour of tape can take many hours, or not work at all.
- •The software or website: professional software is paid (licence or subscription). Upscaling websites usually charge per minute or by credits, and many limit the length or add a watermark on the free tier.
- •Time and patience: choosing the AI model, testing settings, checking the result from start to finish and redoing what goes wrong.
If you have one or two short videos and enjoy experimenting, doing it yourself can be a good option. If you have a box of tapes, processing and checking time is usually what decides it.
3. The most common mistakes when doing it at home
- •Upscaling without proper deinterlacing: VHS is interlaced; if it is not converted properly to progressive video, the AI enlarges the comb lines instead of removing them.
- •Wrong aspect ratio: the picture comes out stretched or squashed (faces wider or narrower), because tape video pixels are not square.
- •Plastic faces: with the wrong model or strength, skin looks smooth and artificial and details get invented.
- •Over-sharpening: halos around edges and noise turned into strange texture.
- •Forgotten sound: the audio ends up out of sync or untreated, even though the picture improves.
- •Not checking the whole video: a section with a tape fault can come out worse than the original, and you only notice if someone watches it from start to finish.
4. Online video enhancement websites: mind your privacy
Uploading a video to a website is convenient, but these are family memories: children, homes, celebrations. Before uploading, check where the video is stored, for how long, whether it is deleted afterwards and whether the company can use it to train its models. Many of these websites are based outside the European Union.
In a lab, the material never leaves the premises or goes through third parties. At Videoconversion we have worked confidentially since 2004, without subcontracting.
5. Quick comparison
| Software at home | Online website | Lab | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Equipment needed | Computer with a powerful graphics card | None | None |
| Cost | Software licence or subscription | Per minute or by credits | Fixed price per tape or per hour |
| Your time | A lot: settings, processing and checking | Little, but with length limits | None |
| Digitising the tape | Done or ordered separately | Done or ordered separately | Included if you send the tape |
| Deinterlacing, aspect ratio and sound | You have to set them | Depends on the website | Included |
| Checking the whole video | You | Nobody | Yes, start to finish |
| Privacy | Full | Depends on the website | Full, no third parties |
| Sample before paying | Yes, if you test it | Sometimes, with a watermark | Yes, 30 s of your video, free |
6. How much it costs to enhance an old video with AI at Videoconversion
| What you have | AI enhancement price |
|---|---|
| The tape (VHS, Video8, Hi8, MiniDV…) and we digitise it | +€9.90 per tape (+€19.90 with stabilisation), on top of digitisation |
| Tapes longer than 180 minutes | +€14.90 per tape (+€29.90 with stabilisation) |
| An already digitised video (MP4, AVI, MOV…) | First hour €19.90; each extra hour €14.90, billed by the half hour |
| Stabilisation of an already digitised file | +€10 per hour |
| 30-second sample of your own video | Free |
Digitising home video tapes costs €15 per tape, €12 from 10 tapes and €10 from 20. Blank or badly damaged tapes are checked and not charged.
- •Example 1: 10 two-hour VHS tapes, digitised and enhanced: 10 × (€12 + €9.90) = €219.
- •Example 2: an already digitised 1 h 30 min wedding video: €19.90 + €7.45 = €27.35.
- •Example 3: a shaky camcorder tape, digitised and enhanced with stabilisation: €15 + €19.90 = €34.90.
7. How we do it
- 1.We digitise the tape in our Barcelona lab, or receive your file by link or on a USB stick.
- 2.We analyse the material: tape type, interlacing, aspect ratio, noise, shake and blank sections (which are not charged).
- 3.We send you 30 free seconds of your own enhanced video, side by side, before and after.
- 4.We enhance it with professional AI and our own technology: progressive picture, less noise, more detail, stabilisation if needed and Full HD.
- 5.We check it from start to finish and deliver it as Full HD MP4 by secure download or on a USB stick, with a before-and-after comparison video.
Frequently asked questions
Where can I enhance an old VHS video with AI?
You have three options: AI enhancement software on your computer (you need a powerful graphics card and time), a website that processes it online (convenient, but check privacy and limits) or a lab such as Videoconversion in Barcelona, which digitises the tape, enhances it, checks it all and delivers it ready to watch, with shipping across Spain and files delivered by download worldwide.
How much does it cost to enhance an old family video with AI?
At Videoconversion, +€9.90 per tape if we digitise it (+€19.90 with stabilisation), or from €19.90 for the first hour if your video is already digitised. Doing it yourself costs the software licence or website credits, plus the equipment and your time.
Is it worth doing it myself?
For one or two short videos, if you have a good computer and enjoy experimenting, it can be. For a collection of tapes, processing and checking time usually makes a lab more practical.
Can I see the result before paying?
Yes. We send you a free 30-second sample of your own enhanced video, side by side, before and after, with no obligation.
Does AI change faces or invent things?
A well-tuned enhancement does not change what you see: it cleans noise, recovers sharpness and upscales the picture. Artificial-looking results usually come from the wrong model or strength, which is why we check every video in full.
Want to see how your video would look?
Send us a tape or a file and we will prepare 30 enhanced seconds for free, with no obligation.
